Green Button Hosting

Want to use "Green Button" to get data? We can help!

UtilityAPI offers a simple hosting service for third-parties, DR, DER, EE, energy consultants, managers, and vendors to use a utility's Green Button Connect My Data (sometimes called Green Button Connect or Share My Data) directly from UtilityAPI. We take care of all the setup, hosting, and data parsing so that you don't have to worry about all the technical details and gotchas of the various Green Button Connect (GBC) implementations.

Want UtilityAPI to host your Green Button connection? Contact us.

We can host third party Green Button Connect service for the following utilities:

  • Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E)
  • Southern California Edison (SCE)
  • San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E)
  • Consolidated Edison (ConEd)
  • Commonwealth Edison (ComEd)
  • Ameren Illinois

Green Button Connect is a process by which a third party can register with a utility and the utility will then let customers share their utility data with that third party via a special data authorization and transfer process. Third parties wanting to use this process need to run servers that are compatible with a utility's Green Button Connect implementation.

If you don't want or have the technical resources to run and maintain your own servers for this special connection, we offer a hosted solution where you can register as a third party with a utility, and we'll host and maintain the special connection for you. All the authorizations and data coming in via this Green Button connection will be integrated into your existing UtilityAPI account so customers who share data via Green Button Connect will show up in our dashboard and API just the same as all your other authorizations.

Estimated setup time: 4-12 weeks

Each utility that offers GBC has a different setup process, and may of these processes are still very manual. We will help walk you through each step and handle all of the technical work, but be prepared for substantial wait times from the utility side when setting up Green Button Connect. Below, we've outlined the general setup process we've seen.

The first step is to contact us so we can learn more about the specific hosting needs you have. We will also go over the registration process for the utilities you want to connect to and what you can expect from that connection.

In order for the utility to list you as a third party with which customers can share data via Green Button Connect, your company will need to submit an application to the utility. We'll walk you through the registration process, and you will list UtilityAPI as your technical contact (so we can take care of the technical setup and any maintenance). Some utilities offer an online process, and some utilities have a manual/email registration process. If the utility offers an online third party account profile, you will need to share access to that profile with us (we'll send you an authorization link to do this).

After you've registered with a utility and listed UtilityAPI as your technical contact, we will submit the technical details (e.g. any SSL certificates, redirect urls, etc.) to the utility so they can perform the connectivity testing. This likely involves several emails back and forth with the utility and may take several weeks.

After connectivity testing, you are ready to be published as a registered third party that can use the Green Button Connect implementation for the utility on their production online portal. Depending on the utility, the waiting time for publishing can take anywhere from a few days to several months.

Customers can now start sharing data with you from the utility via Green Button Connect! Your connection will be directly integrated into UtilityAPI so customers who share data with you via Green Button Connect will show up like any other authorization in your dashboard and via our API.
